CRANSTON - The Lions defeated South Kingstown 1-0 in double overtime in thrilling fashion on Saturday, November 21st to capture the Division II State Championship, the program’s first state title since 2001. The game was back and forth all day with both teams coming up big on the defensive end. Both the Lions and Rebels had opportunities to score but Mary Kelley came up big for the Lions in goal and South Kingstown’s May Kimber repeatedly turned away great scoring chances from the Lions. After 40 minutes of action both teams were knotted at 0-0, headed to overtime. In the first overtime period Drew Swanson came up huge on the defensive end for the Lions as her and Kelley turned away the Rebels best scoring opportunity on a penalty corner and helped the Lions survive overtime still tied 0-0 with the Rebels. Their tremendous play and outstanding teamwork truly set the tone for the Lions from that point on. In double overtime with just 4 minutes and 54 seconds left Junior, Grace Miguel received a pass from Junior, Sadie Brown and scored the game winning goal on a reverse sweep from just inside the circle.
